NBC's Poker After Dark

with Shana Hiatt

Poker After DarkTypical of conservative mainstream TV network's, NBC borrowed some tried and true elements from other poker TV shows in launching its Poker After Dark program. We get yet another No Limit Holdem show, with a name and concept directly patterned on the UK's Late Night Poker show, and a familiar face as host. But while the show itself debuted with one of the most tedious hours in the history of television, NBC's Poker After Dark at started with pocket aces by signing former World Poker Tour personality Shana Hiatt as host. While several players and other announcers have had an impact by appearing on various poker television shows, Hiatt's ongoing popularity has been a minor culture phenomenon of its own.

It almost didn't come to pass though, as the World Poker Tour attempted to prevent Hiatt from working for the show, and NBC's other poker program the National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Hiatt had to get a restraining order to prevent the WPT from interfering with her securing work with NBC.

As for the program itself, it seems like the next step in poker TV is to hire writers. Boring poker banter is tedious when you are sitting at a poker table, but watching it on television is excruciating. It should be illegal to say so many words without saying anything interesting. NBC, more Shana, and less babbling drivel please.
