Before
the explosion caused by television poker, if you asked people
on the street to name a poker player, only two names might possibly roll of their lips. One could have been Amarillo Slim, whose
self-promotional activities have been unending for decades. The other would have been Johnny Chan, due to his silent appearance in
Rounders with Matt Damon.
Rounders attempted to almost deify Chan as a player above all others. While that characterization is definitely
flawed, one of Johnny Chan's accomplishments will certainly never be equaled. Johnny won the main event of the
World Series of Poker in 1987. He won again in 1988,
and then came in second to Phil Hellmuth in 1989. Such a streak of dominance will never again be possible with the much
larger fields that now enter tournaments, particularly the WSOP main event.
Chan and Doyle Brunson are the only players to have won ten World Series of Poker bracelets. --
